I'm on chapter 4 -- the entire galaxy is infected, and I have to start freeing one system at the time. I have plenty of Rez (50,000)... but ZERO GOONS.

Since I'm friends with all non-zombies, I can't GET GOONS.

But I NEED GOONS to fight Zombies (they keep infecting my ships).

Please... how do I get goons?

You may still be able to find goon pod containers that you can shoot floating about, but that's random.

The main way is to dis-infect a colony system or two and get them from those stations.

Your cloning tanks are still operational as well, if gaining levels is something that is happening with much regularity.

If nothing else, do Supply Run mission a few times. In that mission, all you have to do is pickup some crates so speeding with small or tiny ship will do the job. If you really need extra protection, cloak your fleet and order it to be passive while you run for the crates and mass retreat after you've completed the mission.

IIRC Supply Run mission gives you 30 goon per run and there is extra 75 per level up. In infected systems, before infection is cleared there are missions with 150 goons reward. At the moment I can recall only to such missions. Lost Puppies where you have to escort few ships from point A to point B and Morale Booster where you have to 50 tiny zombie ships within 2 and half minutes. In escort missions drill is the same as for Supply Run, if dying to much, cloak, AI: passive and focus on the mission objective. Morale Booster is the tricky one you'll need the fleet that can quickly kill fast moving targets. Grav missiles help a lot.

The morale booster mission is hell.... i always fail it, sometimes its down to 3 ships before time runs out... arrgh!
The escort missions are the best way in my opinion to get exstra goons since u usually have lots of support of Civ ships in the area, so use them as distraction while u race the ship to the gate.

Yeah, it's difficult to finish but not as risky as other missions. In last playthrough I was focusing on beam weapons (to see are they any good and no, they are far weaker than cannons) and I had fleet configuration that could do it in less then 90 seconds. Trick is to have grav missiles on as many ships as possible and to use long range beams (overload or focal emitter) instead fusion beam. Having more ships with grav missile is better then more missiles per ship because one ship can target only one enemy. Also, huge ships with turrets rise kill counter faster then those with only fixed mounts.

I'm not sure about cannon focus games, I'll be there in a few days. But I have a feeling that it will involve a lot of daka with particle cannons :)

Thanks for all the replies, folks -- I figured it out, but in a less-than-efficient-way.

After I clear out the main zombie infection, there's always 2-4 planets with nothing going on, a UTA station, and a CIV station.

I literally hop from one planet to another (or the station) and look for debris. About 1 in 3 hops I will find debris... with a 50% chance the debris is filled with goons.

With a Large Freighter with only 10% goons, I can usually get my fill of goons in about 20-30 minutes of hopping. (my supplemental ships can easily dispatch with zombie stragglers, while I focus on grabbing debris with my 4 tractor beams). I need to constantly "repair" my freighter to unload the goons into my Clockwork II, but the system works.

Of course, I have to start over after buying all those station upgrades...

That too is legit way to get goons :)

There is a button for releasing goons in life pods (think it's 'u' by default) in the same manner as dumping rez ('b' by default) but it doesn't fill goon meter as fast as "repairing". As if recruiting is rerolled after beacon collects life pod.

BTW, Star Cruiser has higher crew capacity then Freighter.
Edit 2: http://spacepiratesandzombies.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Ships Carrier has the highest crew capacity and decent amount of utility slots.

I haven't unlocked the Carrier or Cruiser yet! I'm looking forward to getting some more big ships.

I'll try test out the 'dump crew' button tonight. Thanks!

Once you can liberate systems focus on the systems that give you goons - CIV colony-station systems. Different systems give different amounts and they refill pretty quickly so try to liberate the systems with a large maximum capacity. Once you have a few of these systems you can easily get 500+ every jump you make.

Oh geez, I had no idea! I stopped upgrading CIV stations completely because they were only giving me free rez, which I don't need at all... and Zombies seem to invade only UTA-Station areas.

I'll look for the Goon-Producing stations as soon as I get on my computer! Thanks!

There are three button-looking boxes in the upper right of the starmap screen, one for each Civ station type. They in fact aren't buttons (you don't need to click on them) but if you hover your mouse over one, it will highlight all systems with that Civ type.

i have a tactic. fit 3 sauccers with a turret mod, put a gun booster, put particle cannons in the 3 slots left. in the 4th hanger, make a colt with 3 paticle cannons and 2 reactor boosters. dont put goons on any of them. just self-destruct when they get infected. i beat the whole Ch.4 using those 4 ships.

Also, if you happen to get a cheap motel event pop up, you can basically fill up your goons. Repairing your ship when it's full will transfer the extra goons to the beacon.

What a civ system gives you is based on system type. You obviously hit mining systems first, which provide only Rez. Science systems give you free data, and colony systems give you free goons.

They regenerate their stock over time, and you can increase the max they provide by upgrading their strength.
