Can you send us your console.log file found within the game directory? Sorry for the troubles.

I'm sorry but there is no such file. I've attached a list of all files in die spaz-directories (made with "find ./spaz/ -type f").

And thank you for the quick reply :)

Edit: To refine the problem description: The text is also not visible within the configuration tool that appears on startup.

Hmm, odd ... can you tell me if you have Ariel and Ariel Bold fonts installed on your computer?

Assuming you ment "Arial":
Code:
causa-prima@causa-prima:~$ find /usr/share/fonts/ -iname "*arial*"
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Arial.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/arial.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Arial_Italic.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/arialbi.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/ariali.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Arial_Bold.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/arialbd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Arial_Black.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/Arial_Bold_Italic.ttf

edit: Is there no way to start spaz in a verbose-mode, e.g. by adding an "--verbose"-parameter?

If I understand you correctly, that is what the console.log file would tell us. I'm not sure why your game is not producing one. It would be able to tell us if something failed to load.

If you haven't already, try a quick re install, just to rule out corruption. Sorry again for the troubles. We'll get you sorted as soon as we can.

Sadly, reinstalling did not change anything. I installed it as a normal user (so no superuser rights) without any error. The game seems to work fine otherwise, exept for the text. The md5-sum of the install-file is also the same as stated on the humble bundle site.

I have the exact same problem on Arch Linux 64-bit.
I've managed to find console.log in ~/.local/share/SPAZ/console.log and attached it.
Also attaching a screenshot of a startup window.
Hope it helps.

I can confirm what projedi said, startup dialog looks exactly the same here and console.log is located at ~/.local/shar/SPAZ (I've also attached it.)

Looks like the "default" font color is black on your systems instead of white.

I wonder if it is possible to edit the settings file to make this white
OR
If some system font setting has to be altered.

Strange are lines "Failed to load/create profile font (Arial Bold/36)" because there aren't any "Arial Bold 36 (ansi).uft" in my "spaz/common/data/fonts" directory. Which to my understanding is a directory where all the game fonts lie.

Wow, this is a weird one. The console.log file only reports a failure to load an openAL lib, but who knows if that is somehow related. I will pass this along to our porting contact as well.

I just didn't have 32-bit pulseaudio libs installed. Fixed it now - didn't affect the fonts problem.
And my console.log is now nearly identical to that of causa prima.

I hope this will be resolved, I have the same problem
Also Arch linux 64 bit here,
But I don't have Arial installed, because it is proprietary (yes I realize the irony, this software is that too, but it is a gaming project for Linux which I want to support)
But is it neccesary to have Arial installed?

This is on the list for our Linux porter, although I am not sure what we can do because we cannot distribute Arial with SPAZ i believe.

My problem is solved after updating to the latest packages in debian sid, where "The *nvidia*-ia32 packages have been converted into empty dummy packages to aid switching to multiarch packages and removing the obsolete ia32-libs packages.". I did the following (as suggested):
Code:
dpkg --add-architecture i386
apt-get update
apt-get install libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 nvidia-vdpau-driver:i386
which also installed multiple other i386 packages. Maybe this all was just a temporal problem caused by the package transitions.

Thanks anyways!

This seemsĀ to be nvidia-specific.
My laptop has dual graphics. If I boot it in nVidia mode, I get this issue. If I use the Intel graphics card, the text shows fine.

That was indeed the issue. Installing 32-bit libs and utilities for nvidia solved it on Arch as well.

That sorcery also fixed it for me, thanks :).
I had to deal with some dependency hell, but it was fine in the end.

This also fixes the crash I was having with Shatter, another game in the Humble Bundle 6, if that helps someone.
